120 BAHADUR: A Stirring Tribute to India’s Forgotten War Heroes
The new film 120 BAHADUR brings to life one of India’s most remarkable military stories. This war drama tells the true story of Major Shaitan Singh Bhati and his 120 soldiers who fought against overwhelming odds.
The Historical Battle of Rezang La
The year was 1962. Chinese troops began advancing toward Ladakh in a major military operation. The strategic Chushul sector became a critical battleground. This area contained an important airstrip that both sides recognized as vital for controlling the region.
Major Shaitan Singh Bhati commanded the 13th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment. His platoon was stationed at Rezang La, a high-altitude pass in the Chushul sector. The Major understood that if Chinese forces captured Chushul, they could potentially take control of all Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.
On November 17, 1962, Major Bhati spotted more than 3000 Chinese soldiers advancing toward his position. His force of 120 men faced impossible odds. Army headquarters ordered him to retreat given the overwhelming numbers against them. However, Major Bhati and his men made a historic decision to stand their ground.
Bringing History to the Screen
Director Razneesh ‘Razy’ Ghai takes an authentic approach to filmmaking. Instead of using studio green screens, the production filmed in actual challenging locations. This commitment to realism gives the war scenes exceptional authenticity and impact.
The film’s screenplay by Rajiv G Goswami focuses on a little-known chapter of Indian military history. This unfamiliar story works to the film’s advantage, allowing audiences to discover these events alongside the characters. The war sequences are particularly well-executed, showing careful attention to historical accuracy.
However, the film’s first half follows familiar patterns seen in earlier war films like BORDER and KESARI. The buildup scenes and military humor feel reminiscent of previous productions in this genre. Some subplots, particularly involving a rookie soldier, could have been developed more thoroughly for greater emotional impact.
Powerful Performances Anchor the Film
Farhan Akhtar delivers a commanding performance as Major Shaitan Singh Bhati. This marks his return to acting after nearly four and a half years. He portrays the military leader with understated strength and occasional controlled anger, creating a memorable character.
Raashii Khanna appears in a special appearance role that adds emotional depth to the story. The supporting cast of military characters brings authenticity to the regiment’s dynamics. Debutant Sparsh Walia stands out as Radio Operator Ramchander Yadav, showing particular promise in his first major role.
Technical Excellence and Musical Limitations
The film excels in its technical presentation. Cinematographer Tetsuo Nagata captures Ladakh’s landscapes in spectacular fashion, showing the region from perspectives never before seen in Indian cinema. The action sequences feel realistic and appropriate for the film’s serious tone without becoming excessively violent.
Costume design and production elements maintain historical accuracy throughout. However, the musical score represents one of the film’s weaker aspects. Songs like ‘Yaad Aate Hain’ and ‘Main Hoon Woh Dharti Maa’ fail to create the emotional connection that similar patriotic films have achieved.
A Fitting Tribute with Some Limitations
120 BAHADUR succeeds as a sincere tribute to military heroes. The film’s immersive battle scenes and Farhan Akhtar’s powerful performance create a moving experience. The authentic location shooting and attention to historical detail set it apart from many contemporary war films.
The film does face challenges with its conventional first half and familiar narrative elements. These factors prevent it from becoming truly groundbreaking within the genre. For box office success, the film will likely depend on strong word-of-mouth recommendations and patriotic sentiment among viewers.
Despite some limitations, 120 BAHADUR accomplishes its primary mission. It honors the courage of 120 soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The film ensures that their story will be remembered by new generations of Indians.
