Celebrities Join Government in Major Push for Road Safety in India
The Indian government is launching a major new campaign to tackle the country’s road safety crisis. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has officially begun the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan (SSA) 2026. This nationwide public awareness drive aims to promote responsible behaviour on roads across India.
Stars Lend Their Voices to a Critical Cause
To capture the nation’s attention, the campaign has enlisted some of India’s biggest film and music personalities. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, along with popular actors Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, are serving as faces of the initiative. They are joined by actor Kay Kay Menon, renowned singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan, and lyricist-composer Swanand Kirkire. Their involvement is designed to make the vital message of road safety resonate with a wide audience, especially younger citizens.
The campaign is entering its fourth consecutive year. It will be marked by a grand telethon broadcast on CNN-News18. The event is scheduled to take place in Mumbai on January 25. It will feature conversations and performances, all focused on driving a lasting change in public attitude and commitment to safer roads.
The Stark Reality Behind the Campaign
The urgent need for this initiative is underscored by grim official statistics. According to MoRTH data, India recorded a staggering 4,87,707 road crashes in the year 2024. These crashes resulted in 1,77,175 fatalities. This translates to an average of nearly 485 lives lost every single day on Indian roads.
The data reveals a particularly alarming trend. Over two-thirds of these deaths involved individuals between the ages of 18 and 45. This highlights how road accidents are cutting short young, productive lives. Key risk factors remain prevalent. These include over speeding, rash driving, dangerous overtaking, and jaywalking. The non-use of helmets and seatbelts, along with delays in providing emergency help during the critical “golden hour” after a crash, continue to contribute significantly to the death toll.
From Concern to Conscious Duty
The theme chosen for SSA 2026 is ‘Kartavya’, which translates to ‘Duty’. This reinforces the idea that road safety is not merely a government or police regulation. It is a shared civic responsibility of every person who uses the road. The campaign’s tagline, “Parvaah Se, Kartavya Tak”, signals a deliberate shift. The goal is to move public sentiment from passive concern to conscious, everyday action.
This year’s campaign is structured around four key pillars. These are Kartavya (Duty), Kayda (Discipline), Kavach (Shield), and Kranti (Change). Together, they aim to build awareness, promote disciplined behaviour, leverage technology and AI for safer roads, and enable long-term, community-driven transformation.
A Collective Commitment for Safer Roads
Industry leaders supporting the broadcast have emphasized the collaborative nature of the effort. Santosh Menon, Chief Content Officer at Network18, stated that Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan represents a collective commitment. He noted it brings together government, institutions, industry, media, and citizens on a shared platform of responsibility. He stressed that through collective ownership and sustained behavioural change, the nation can move from good intent to real impact.
Puneet Singhvi, Chief Strategy Officer for the Network18 Group, added his support. He applauded the Ministry’s leadership in driving this sustained initiative. He affirmed a commitment to amplifying its message to deepen public awareness and encourage the responsible behaviour that can prevent crashes and save lives.
With strong celebrity support and planned nationwide reach, Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan 2026 aims to go beyond simple awareness. Its core mission is to inspire meaningful action. It urges every citizen to embrace road safety as a personal and shared duty. The grand telethon will air on CNN-News18 on Sunday, January 25, starting at 11:00 am.
